Background:

Semester-long project focused on developing and designing a Philadelphia-centric exhibition.

Big Idea:

Yellow fever and other communicable diseases have influenced Philadelphia’s public health.

Goals:

  • Securing a City will introduce new perspectives of yellow fever’s history in Philadelphia to spur visitors to view history and medicine in a new light.
  • Securing a City will layout yellow fever’s influence on Philadelphia.
  • Securing a City will spark new perspectives on the importance of vaccinations and the cultural history of medicine.
  • Securing a City will integrate immersive environmental elements to enable visitors to experience historic Philadelphia.

Objectives:

  • Visitors will be able to distinguish effective methods of treatment from ineffective methods of treatment.
  • Visitors will be able to compare 18th century Philadelphia’s public health to modern day Philadelphia’s public health through interactive mapping.
  • Visitors will explore contemporary controversies surrounding vaccinations and nationwide healthcare and will have the space to provide their own commentary.
